Syzygy.

I'm totally serious. It's a word. It's to do with describing the meter in classical poetry, grouping two feet into one metrical unit, I think. I also kind of think this word was made up by the Germans. I don't even know how they'd pronounce it.

miasma

Especially when it's used to describe a lot of people, e-mail or comment threads. XD

Maybe I'm just amused because I thought the person said "me asthma" at first =)

Heteroschedastic.

Metameter

They're both statistical terminology. And they're nice to say aloud. Repeatedly. As though you are a small child on a long car journey.

Er, also, hello everyone.

Oddly enough it's a modern French term for "Yuppies". One of the rare cases of English being adopted into French.

Other glorious shining nuggets of English hiding in the francophones murky dialog are...

Les Rugbymen
Which means rugby players oddly enough

Un Sherlock Holmes
A detective, just like Sherlock Holmes!

11:55 am - "Boycott"

bride
"boycott"

The first time I heard someone use this word when I was little, I actually thought they said "boyscout". It sounded strange, so I knew they didn't really say "boyscout", but I couldn't figure out what the word actually was.

To this day, when I hear the word "boycott", I still picture half a dozen 'tween boys standing in a row, all in the same little tan uniforms and bright red Orwellian Spy neckerchiefs. They're not doing anything except for the occasional boy who picks his nose and wipes it on his forest green knee-length shorts. They're just standing there while the rest of the world moves right past them and largely ignores them.

It was amusing to me when I realized, as I got older, that this is how most boycotts work out anyway.

Boondoggle and Scoubidou

We used to call it "gimp", but once Pulp Fiction was released, I think that name took on a whole new meaning.

Gangly

Awkwardly tall and spindly; lanky and loosely built

Somebody described me as gangly recently. The word just rolled off the tongue so beautifully and sounded so odd that I thought it had to go here.
